Overview

NetEnt is revisiting one of its most iconic slot characters with the release of the Gonzo’s Gold slot. Chances are if you’ve ever played at an online casino, you’ve at the very least come across Gonzo’s Quest. The title is one of the most iconic in the industry and is regularly featured as part of free-spins promotions and other bonuses. Things are much changed for Gonzo’s Gold though, with a whole new gameplay mechanic and bonus features. Is this just dining out on the legacy of its predecessor? Or is it a slot worthy of the name? Let’s take a look in this Gonzo’s Gold slot review and find out.

How to Play

Outside of the characters, there are not too many similarities with the original Gonzo’s Quest slot. The action here takes place on a 5x5 grid and it has a cluster pay system. The game will pay out for clusters of three or more for higher-win symbols and four or more for lower-win symbols. Sadly, the avalanche mechanic made popular by the original title is not active here.

A big selling point for the game is that it offers a huge betting range. The minimum players can wager is €0.10, while the maximum is €200, which should satisfy players on all budgets. You can adjust your stake at any time by clicking on the stack of coins icon.

Symbols and Payouts

As we’ve mentioned, the slot uses a cluster pays mechanic and it pays out as multiples of your total stake.

The highest paying symbols in the game are the Gonzo symbols which pay out a whopping 5,000x your stake for a 25 symbol cluster. This gradually declines all the way down to 2x your stake for clusters of three. The Aztec king-like symbol is next, paying 2,000x for 25 and 1.5x for three. The other Aztec animal symbols pay 750 for combos of 25, and 1x your stake for three.

The Ace and the King are the biggest paying of the royal symbols, coughing up 300x each for clusters of 25 and 0.5x for four. The Queen, Jack, and 10 are the lowest paying, they offer 200x each for 25 and 0.5x for four.

Best Gonzo's Gold Bonus Feature

NetEnt tends to fill their slots with great bonuses, but it must be said the Gonzo’s Gold bonus options are not its most imaginative. The main bonus is a free spins round, which is triggered when you land between three and five scatter symbols on the reels.

The number of Gonzo’s Gold free spins rewarded is always 10, regardless of the number of scatters that triggered it. You will receive a different payout depending on how many symbols triggered it though. Three scatters will give you a 2x payout, four will give you 20x, and five will give you 200x.

At the start of each free spins round, a grid of nine will appear. You will select a block and it will reveal a symbol. This symbol will then be an expanding symbol for the duration of the free spins round.

RTP & Volatility

The Gonzo's Gold RTP is listed by NetEnt as 96.11%, which is marginally above average, though, it is a significant improvement on the original title. The volatility is rated as 5/5. During our run-through for this Gonzo’s Gold slot review, we found that the game offered some good payouts, especially during the free spins round.
