Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission
The Isle of Man is a relatively small island between Great Britain and Ireland. Although it is a dependency of the British Crown, it is entirely self-governed. This is of particular importance when it comes to the regulation and licensing of online casinos because it can act independently of the British UKGC (United Kingdom Gambling Commission). As a result, the Government of the Isle of Man introduced new legislation in 2001 that actively encourages online gambling companies to settle down in the country in order to get licensed and regulated by the Gambling Supervision Commission (also referred to as the GSC). More information about Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission
The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission was established in 1962 but, in its early days, its main responsibilities were solely focused on the land-based gambling market. In the early 2000s, the jurisdiction was expanded to online gambling due to the increasing popularity of online casinos.
In order to receive a license from the Gambling Supervision Commission, a company first has to fill out an application form that includes detailed information about the applicant and extensive background information. This is to ensure that only trustworthy companies get licensed. If an applicant successfully passes screening, a license will be issued once a £35,000 license fee has been paid. This fee has to be paid every year in order to renew the license. On top of that, the gross gaming yield is subject to 1.5% in tax up to £20,000,000 (£20 million) a year.
Isle of Man Online Gaming Licenses are divided into four groups:
- The OGRA License
- Network Services License
- Licenses for Economic and Political DR
The Isle of Man license is a so-called remote gaming license and can be used to offer games in unregulated markets within Europe. Furthermore, this license is whitelisted by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), which means that casinos and bookmakers under this jurisdiction can legally advertise their services within the UK market, too.
The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission is a highly regarded and well-established regulatory body that seeks to work with trustworthy operators under its jurisdiction. For that reason, its goal is to establish a transparent framework that includes strict anti-money laundering (AML) regulations and fair gaming. All random number generators that are used for casino games have to be tested and certified before they can be deployed online, too.
Furthermore, licensees have to follow strict rules when it comes to responsible gambling. This includes mandatory site functionalities such as self-help tests, deposit limits, and self-exclusion. Most importantly, the GSC seeks to protect players and wants to make sure that all winnings are paid out reliably. Another point on their agenda is data protection. To ensure the maximum amount of safety in this regard, data servers can only be located directly on the Isle of Man.
The security measures at an online casino licensed by the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission are very similar to many other well-established jurisdictions. As already mentioned, data protection is on top of the list so that players can sign up at a casino with peace of mind. Moreover, it is a requirement to digitally encrypt all data streams between the casino and the player to add an additional layer of security, particularly when it comes to financial transactions.
The Gambling Supervision Commission is very much on the player’s side and acts as a mediator in case of a dispute between a customer and one of their licensees. If an online casino does not abide by its rules, large fines can be issued and, in the worst case, the gambling license can be withdrawn.
