Veikkaus to Negotiate Redundancy with 830 Employees

At least 830 staff members of Veikkaus are set to be dropped. The Finnish gambling monopoly revealed it already started negotiations with its staff as it aims to open up to 200 redundancies. Veikkaus says this is to secure its future operations.

Around 330 Employees Will See Contract Changes as Veikkaus Looks at Redundancies

Veikkaus is preparing to open up to 200 redundancies after opening negotiations with 830 staff members. That’s not all! The gambling monopoly also said it may adjust contract terms of around 330 employees. Veikkaus said the changes aim at securing the company’s future operations.

But there’s good news amidst the readjustments. The company said it may retain some employees by redirecting them to new positions within the company. This is especially in the Casino Tampere establishment expected to be ready soon. The company said it expects to add 50 staff members here.

The sales and channels team is set to suffer the most from the company’s redundancy negotiations. Jari Heino said the company’s future can only be secure if the company readjusts its operations to keep up with operating environment demands. The senior vice president said this while also emphasizing responsible gaming and offering a top-notch customer experience.

They also added the company’s intention to maintain its extensive game provider and retailer network. Heino said this will happen while ensuring the company’s gaming arcades operations remain uniform. They concluded by stating the company is keen on investing in its land-based retail network.

Not the First Time Veikkaus Faced Questions About Future Operations

The monopoly status of the Finnish gambling company came under scrutiny in 2019. A survey conducted that year revealed that a marginal majority of citizens supported the idea of scrapping the existing gambling regulatory framework in Finland

Questions about the company’s monopoly didn’t end with the survey. The European Gaming and Betting Association called on the Finnish government to adjust its gambling policies. The EGBA said this toward the close of 2020 with its recommendations being to eliminate the company’s monopoly in Finland.

Veikkaus has been on an enforcement drive this year to protect consumers. One of the measures included in its protection framework includes online gambling loss limits. But this was set to be temporary due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The measures were later made permanent. These measures will see players’ daily losses be limited to €500 while playing Veikkaus’ online casino games

Veikkaus’ Revenue to go to the Country’s State Budget

The redundancy issues within the company came two days after the Minister for Science and Culture proposed revenue from the betting agency should reside in the state budget.

Antti Kurvinen said this in reference to the drop in Veikkaus’ revenue. This drop occasioned a negative impact on the country’s culture, sport, health & social welfare, youth work, and science sectors.

The Minister proposed the revenue transfer should happen in 2024. Kurvinen said in an interview with STT that the solution to the negative impact on the mentioned sectors is to transfer Veikkaus’ revenue to the state budget. They used Alko as an example saying the income and dividends from the company are included in the state budget.
