What we checked

We first reviewed Kraken's published service information and checked our referral link on 9 September 2026; the signup page displayed the GoodLuckMate invite code. On 18 October 2026 we re-checked every Kraken fee, funding, verification, withdrawal, security, proof-of-reserves and licensing page cited in this review. We did not open a new account, fund a purchase or test a casino transfer for this review.

Our assessment is that Kraken is worth comparing for fiat purchases where its services are available, particularly if you can fund an account by bank transfer in a supported currency and are comfortable using Kraken Pro. Its detailed fee schedule, account-security options and regular proof-of-reserves reviews are strengths. Card purchases cost more and can trigger withdrawal holds, so do not assume that a first purchase will fund an immediate payment elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • In business since 2011, with registrations, licenses or authorizations in eight jurisdictions listed on its own site.
  • A detailed public fee schedule, with Kraken Pro maker and taker rates that fall as 30-day volume rises.
  • Strong account controls, including passkeys, authenticator-app two-factor authentication, a global settings lock and no account recovery by SMS.
  • Regular proof-of-reserves reviews that customers can check against their own balances.

Cons

  • Instant buys cost 1% (1.5% for custom orders) plus a spread, and debit-card deposits add 3.75% plus a fixed fee.
  • Kraken Pro's entry tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker; its lowest advertised rates require much higher volume or balances.
  • Card, digital-wallet, PayPal and some bank purchases can block withdrawals for 72 hours to seven days.
  • Cash funding is limited to six currencies, and the assets and features available depend on your verified residence.

Kraken and Kraken Pro

Kraken offers a straightforward buy-and-sell interface in its app and on its website: you see a quote, and the price includes a spread as well as the trading fee. Kraken Pro, on the web and in a separate mobile app, provides an order book, charts and more order types, with maker and taker fees instead of a quote that includes a spread. The two interfaces use the same Kraken account.

Kraken Pro's fee rates are below the app's 1% instant-buy fee even at its entry tier, but limit orders and order books take more care to use. Instant buys do not count toward Kraken Pro's 30-day volume tiers, and the Kraken+ subscription applies only to the Kraken app and website. Compare the final cost and choose an interface you understand before deciding how to purchase.

Kraken fees: what buying crypto costs

At the time of this review, Kraken's fee schedule lists a 1% trading fee for instant and recurring purchases and 1.5% for custom orders in the Kraken app and website. These percentages are not the total purchase cost: the quote includes a spread that can vary with market conditions, the asset and the order size, and payment-method charges may apply. Kraken shows the full fee breakdown on the final confirmation screen.

Kraken Pro tiers can also be reached through futures volume or assets held on Kraken. Compare the actual order quote rather than assuming one interface is always cheaper. Current trading fees

Kraken+ costs 4.99 a month or 49.99 a year in major currencies and waives trading fees on up to $10,000 a month of buys, sells and conversions in the Kraken app and website. Spreads and card fees still apply, and it does not cover Kraken Pro. At the 1% instant-buy fee, the monthly plan only pays for itself once you trade roughly 500 a month in those currencies. Withdrawing crypto also has a minimum amount and may incur a charge. These depend on the asset and network. Check the amount that will arrive after charges against the receiving service's own minimum before making a purchase. Withdrawal fees and minimums

Availability, funding and verification

Account eligibility, available assets and payment options depend on verified residence and other account requirements. Kraken does not serve some countries and regions, and supporting a cryptocurrency does not mean every customer can buy, hold or withdraw it. Check Kraken's current eligibility information before signing up.

Kraken's cash funding page lists deposits in six currencies: US, Canadian and Australian dollars, euros, British pounds and Swiss francs. Bank transfers are usually free or low-cost but can take several business days; debit-card deposits are near-instant but cost 3.75% plus 0.25 in the deposit currency and can trigger withdrawal holds. If your bank account uses another currency, expect conversion and international-transfer costs, and some regions cannot fund an account by card. Compare processing times, fees and withdrawal conditions in Kraken's cash funding information.

Kraken requires identity verification before you can buy, sell or deposit. It generally asks for a valid government-issued ID and proof of address, says most verifications take less than 30 minutes and notes that manual reviews take longer. When we checked in October 2026, its verification page also warned of delays in processing new accounts. Verified individual accounts have cash deposit and withdrawal limits below $100,000 a month; higher limits require further verification. Kraken's verification levels

Is Kraken safe?

No exchange can rule out losses, but Kraken publishes detailed information about its licenses, account security and reserves. Its licensing page lists registrations, licenses or authorizations held by Kraken companies in eight jurisdictions, including crypto-asset service provider licenses under the EU's MiCA rules, and states where it is not licensed. Which protections apply depends on the Kraken company that serves your verified residence, and registration is not insurance for crypto held on the platform. Where Kraken is licensed or regulated

For account security, Kraken offers passkeys and authenticator-app two-factor authentication, a global settings lock, email confirmation for new withdrawal addresses and no account recovery by phone or SMS. It says it uses cold storage and hot-wallet systems to secure funds, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and has completed a SOC 2 Type 1 examination. Kraken's security features

Kraken's latest proof-of-reserves snapshot, dated 30 June 2026, reported reserve ratios between 100.3% and 102.9% for BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and ADA, and above 105% for the USDC, USDT and USDG stablecoins. Customers can check that their balances were included. Kraken itself notes the limits: a proof of reserves shows control of funds at one point in time and cannot rule out hidden claims on the assets, funds borrowed to pass the review or losses after the snapshot. Kraken's proof of reserves

Kraken has also settled regulatory cases. In February 2023, two Kraken companies agreed to pay $30 million to settle US Securities and Exchange Commission charges over an unregistered crypto staking program and to stop offering it. In November 2022, Kraken settled apparent US sanctions violations with the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control for $362,158.70.

To reduce your own risk, turn on passkey or authenticator-app two-factor authentication for sign-in and funding, and consider the global settings lock.

How long do Kraken withdrawals take?

Withdrawals are not always available immediately. Certain card or digital-wallet purchases, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, can trigger a 72-hour withdrawal hold, and a new card or payment method can start a new hold. PayPal deposits can also have a 72-hour hold. ACH Plaid purchases have a seven-day hold where that method is offered, as do recurring purchases by SEPA Direct Debit. Whether a hold applies can depend on account history and activity, so holds can apply beyond the first purchase.

Funds may be available for trading while still unavailable for withdrawal, and changing your password holds withdrawals to new addresses for up to 24 hours. Check the account's available-to-withdraw balance and current hold information before relying on it for a payment. Kraken's withdrawal-hold rules

Once no hold applies, Kraken's status guide says internal checks and processing each take up to 10 minutes before a crypto withdrawal is broadcast. It is marked successful after one network confirmation, although the receiving service may wait for more, and some withdrawals are held for a manual review. Crypto withdrawal statuses

Using purchased crypto at another service

Buying crypto and sending it to a casino are separate transactions. Before considering a casino payment, establish that the activity is lawful where you are and that both Kraken and the receiving operator permit the transfer. Kraken's terms prohibit illegal gambling-related use. Kraken terms

Regional account rules can also restrict transfers to third parties. This review does not establish that a direct exchange-to-casino transfer is permitted for your account. Check the applicable regional transfer rules and ask the services about your intended destination if their terms are unclear. An extra wallet does not remove legal or account restrictions.

The asset itself may also be unavailable: Kraken restricts some assets, including some widely used stablecoins, for residents of certain regions. For an otherwise permitted transfer, the asset, network, destination address and any required memo must match the receiving instructions. An incompatible network can cause permanent loss. Kraken's crypto-withdrawal guidance

Also check how the recipient handles rejected payments. Kraken sends withdrawals from its own shared wallet; that sending address is not your personal deposit address. Funds returned automatically to the sending address may be unrecoverable. How exchange withdrawals differ from a personal wallet

For gambling, set an affordable spending limit that includes purchase and transfer costs. Do not borrow to fund play or chase losses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kraken safe?

Kraken has operated since 2011, lists registrations, licenses or authorizations in eight jurisdictions, offers passkeys, two-factor authentication and a global settings lock, and publishes regular proof-of-reserves reviews. No exchange is risk-free: crypto held on any platform carries counterparty risk, a proof of reserves is a point-in-time check, and the protections available depend on the Kraken company that serves your country.

Is Kraken legit?

Kraken is a long-running exchange operated by Payward, Inc. and regional subsidiaries, with registrations, licenses or authorizations in eight jurisdictions. It has also settled US regulatory cases, including a 2023 settlement with the SEC over a crypto staking program. Being legitimate does not make it available everywhere: it does not serve some countries and regions, and the assets and features you can use depend on your verified residence.

What fees does Kraken charge?

In the Kraken app and website, instant and recurring buys carry a 1% trading fee and custom orders 1.5%, plus a spread in the quoted price and any payment-method charge; debit-card deposits cost 3.75% plus 0.25 in the deposit currency. Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker fees at its entry tier, falling with higher volume. Crypto withdrawals have fees and minimums that depend on the asset and network.

Is Kraken Pro cheaper than the Kraken app?

On the trading fee, usually: Kraken Pro's entry rates of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker are below the app's 1% instant-buy fee, and its prices come from an order book rather than a quote that includes a spread. The app is simpler, and a Kraken+ subscription can waive its trading fees on up to $10,000 a month. Compare the final cost of the order you plan to place.

How long do Kraken withdrawals take?

If no hold applies, Kraken says internal checks and processing each take up to 10 minutes before a crypto withdrawal is broadcast, and the withdrawal is marked successful after one network confirmation. The receiving service may wait for more confirmations, some withdrawals are held for a manual review, and holds after certain purchases can delay withdrawals by 72 hours or seven days.

Why is my Kraken withdrawal on hold?

Common reasons are a 72-hour hold after some card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal purchases; a seven-day hold after ACH Plaid purchases or recurring SEPA Direct Debit purchases; a hold of up to 24 hours on new withdrawal addresses after a password change; or a manual review. A tooltip in the withdrawal flow shows your available balance and any holds.

Does Kraken require ID verification?

Yes. Kraken generally asks for a valid government-issued ID and proof of address before you can buy, sell or deposit. It says most verifications take less than 30 minutes, although manual reviews take longer, and in October 2026 its verification page warned of delays in processing new accounts.

Can I use Kraken to pay at an online casino?

Buying crypto and sending it to a casino are separate steps, and Kraken's terms prohibit illegal gambling-related use. Check that gambling is legal where you are, that both Kraken and the casino permit the transfer, and whether regional rules ban transfers to third parties. A casino accepting cryptocurrency does not confirm that it accepts transfers from Kraken, and this review does not confirm any casino payment route.

Check Kraken's current terms

Before deciding whether Kraken fits your needs, confirm that it serves your verified residence, compare the final quote including the spread and payment charges, and check any withdrawal hold and the receiving service's own rules. This review does not promise a signup reward, immediate withdrawal or acceptance by any casino.
