The Primate King Megaways is a 6-reel Megaways tumbler slot. What makes it different from most Megaways games is the “Primate Meter”; when filled with Primate Coins, it expands the Primate King’s (expanding wild) functionalities across three levels and will award free spins when full.
From my tests, I can conclude that both the base game and the bonus game in Primate King Megaways are solid, but having a good strategy is more important than usual.
This game can be played like a “standard” Megaways slot, you can hunt for coins to capitalize on the bonus features or lay all your chips into eventually reaching the free spins round. I’ll explain more in “How to Win”, so let’s take a look at the symbols and bonus triggers.
Primate King has 11 paying symbols, which is a bit much even for a Megaways slot. One unique point about this game is that the low-paying “9” can be removed when the Primate Meter reaches level 2, which evens the playing field to a degree. Symbols may appear in “stacks” and occupy multiple positions on the columns.
Below is a quick overview of the prizes for all symbols:
In this game, you can stake from €0.20 to €2.00 per spin while the top win is 30,000x. Players can cash in up to €60,000 on max bet settings each round.
I’d describe this Megaways slot as a “conceptual” game since all of its bonuses revolve around the main star - the Primate King. He’s a Sticky Super-Wild that can remove all 9s from the table and give you free spins once sufficient gold coins have been collected, so let me explain how these mechanics work.
The Primate King symbol is an expanding sticky wild with a unique twist on “multiplier” triggers. Instead of simply multiplying the value of connected wins, the value displayed (2x-7x) on the Primate Wild dictates its “lifespan”.
For example, if you see a “x7”, it simply means that the wild can substitute for up to 7 symbols throughout its life. The expanding wild will remain on the board until it connects all symbols its lifespan allows it to.
Once you launch Primate King Evolution, you will see a vertical bar next to the final reel. It represents the “Primate Evolution” meter and is filled with gold coins to unlock additional game features.
This bar starts at level zero, has three thresholds, and 30 coins are needed to reach the final stage:
The Primate Evolution bar is unique to each stake level, meaning that your progress is saved even if you switch bet levels (but it doesn’t carry over to other wagering settings).
When the Primate Evolution bar is completely full, a 6th reel will be unlocked. When a gold coin symbol appears on the 6th reel while a Primate Wild is anywhere on the table, the player receives 4 free spins; one extra spin is given for each health point the “qualifying” Primate Wild has.
What’s unique about the bonus game is that the Primate Wilds will stick until the end regardless of their remaining life.
This game can feature up to 117,649 betways; the number changes on each new tap of the spin button, meaning that it will remain the same throughout the tumbling sequences.
Winning symbols are discarded and replaced with new ones. The only exception is the “Gold Coin” symbol - they’ll remain on the table until the end of the tumble (possibly disrupting some of your chains), and only then will they be added to the Primal Evolution meter.
According to Red Tiger, the Primate King Megaways slot’s RTP score is 95.7%, which is just slightly above the industry’s average. This game is highly volatile, which is to be expected from a Megaways tumbler-type slot.
I wasn’t overly impressed with the original Primate King slot, but the sequel bring some interesting novelty features that were fun to explore.
First of all, the unique Primal Evolution built around reinforcing the expanding wild is a magnificent concept, at least in theory. In practice, this forces players to grind through at least 100+ spins to unlock free spins - and then you’ll have to be lucky enough to trigger two bonus features simultaneously.
I won’t be playing Primal King Megaways for real cash anytime soon, mainly because it takes a while to reach level 3 and get a chance of triggering free spins, but some players may enjoy this progressive experience.
